The tragedy struck on June 12, 2025, when Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, bound for London. The flight issued a mayday call shortly after takeoff and crashed into a hospital hostel near the airport, bursting into flames on impact.
