Honolulu mayor Rick Blangiardi said in a statement that the explosion was "caused by what appears to be illegal fireworks"

The explosion appears to have happened after someone lit an “aerial cake,” a container filled with multiple aerial fireworks, in a driveway, Honolulu Police Chief Arthur Logan said Wednesday at a news conference. The cake then fell to the side, shooting off into crates filled with more fireworks.

In her neighborhood, the fireworks ramp up after Halloween, exploding in the middle of the night until New Year’s. Doran said she can tell if there is a big mixed martial arts fight on TV because the booms begin earlier in the day.
