The suspect hospitalized following an officer-involved shooting on a busy thoroughfare in Modesto on Monday has now died, according to police.

Sherwood told The Modesto Bee that Rupe had been a frequent customer before his fateful visit around 1 p.m. March 17. The owner said two police officers arrived and said they had received a tip that Rupe was there. He had warrants on cases involving lewd acts with a child and firearms, the Modesto Police Department said in a news release Tuesday.

Peter John Salazar's parole was denied after a shooting incident in 1995 where he wounded a police officer. The parole board considered his criminal history and ongoing behavior as indications that he remains a risk to public safety.
