Scotland is continuing to be hit by freezing weather, with rain, sleet and snow expected to fall across large parts of the country. Temperatures at Loch Glascarnoch in the Highlands fell to -11C on Saturday night after forecasters extended a yellow warning from 09:00 on Sunday until 12:00 on Monday.

A number of schools in north-east Scotland have been forced to close after the country was hit by overnight snow and ice. More than 80 schools and nurseries across Aberdeenshire, Moray and Highland council areas are shut due to snow and poor driving conditions on what should have been the first day back for pupils after the holidays.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across parts of Devon and Cornwall. The first warning for snow and ice begins at 17:00 GMT and ends at 10:00 GMT on Tuesday. A second warning for snow across both counties then takes effect from 09:00 on Wednesday to 23:59 the same day.

Heavy snow and ice are expected to cause disruption across Scotland over the weekend, with temperatures forecast to drop as low as -10C. A yellow warning for snow in Shetland is in place until 18:00 while a yellow alert for icy conditions in the Highlands is due to come in to force from 16:00 on Saturday until 10:00 on Sunday.
