Stock market today: Dow flirts with 48,000; Rubrik explodes after this surprise (live coverage)
The Dow had a burst of energy and padded its increase to 0.3%, and revisited the 48,000 mark after trading around it during Friday's action. Salesforce topped the Dow, climbing more than 5%. The S&P 500 also improved with its 0.2% boost, and the Nasdaq composite was in line with other major indexes, rising 0.3%.
Stocks finished mixed and little changed Thursday, a day after the three major equities indexes all rose for the seventh time in eight sessions as weak private-sector employment data furthered traders' belief that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its meeting next week.
Stocks finish higher on Wednesday as investors digest payroll data and monitor the odds of a Fed rate cut next week.
Those numbers pushed stocks higher because, at this point, any new signs of deterioration in the labor market raises the odds for a rate cut from the Federal Reserve. As of Wednesday, traders assigned an 89 percent likelihood for a 25-basis-point cut on December 10, according to CME data.
U.S. stock futures rose on Wednesday after modest advances on Tuesday. Futures of major benchmark indices were higher.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will close early at 1 p.m. ET on Black Friday. After Black Friday, U.S. markets will resume normal hours until closing early on Christmas Eve. Thanksgiving has come and gone, and now it's time to get back to business.
