The U.S. Justice Department wants to ensure Oregon National Guard troops remain federalized while appeal is heard.

According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the crash involved one Humvee, an SUV and a car hauler truck. One soldier was pronounced dead at the scene.

The news comes after a group of veterans gathered in Robert Church Park on Nov. 11 to protest the deployment of ICE and the National Guard to Memphis.

California officials have asked a federal district judge to enjoin the Trump administration from using the National Guard in Los Angeles, arguing the high appeals court order allowing the federalization has been treated as a “blank check” to use the forces beyond the Golden State.

Their original mission was supposed to end on November 15. Now, they will assist ICE through September 30, 2026.
