Former President Jimmy Carter was honored on Capitol Hill on Tuesday with a 21 gun salute before being taken into the Rotunda to lie in state.

The 21-gun salute, a ceremonial tradition in which 21 rounds of artillery are fired consecutively, was executed by U.S. military personnel. Eight individuals then carried the casket of former President Jimmy Carter up the steps of the Capitol and into the building after it had been taken out of the hearse.
