The timeless Times Square treasure made its final descent Wednesday, coming down from its perch on a pole atop 1 Times Square after delighting millions in person and watching on TV for almost 20 years.

The New Year's ball at Times Square descended for the final time Wednesday before it's replaced by a new ball with LED lights. It was the eighth ball used since the drop began in 1907 and had been in service since 2009.

After 17 years of service, Times Square's glittering New Year's Eve ball is hanging up its hat. The ball will be on display this fall in One Times Square.

January 15, 2025 The famous Times Square ball, standing since 2008 and famous for marking the end of the year every December 31, is retiring and will be part of a new immersive historical experience at One Times Square in the fall of this year,
