Alerts from the National Weather Service span swaths of the northern U.S. early Saturday, as heavy snow could appear.

On Saturday at 2:13 p.m. EST the National Weather Service issued an updated winter storm warning valid from 4 p.m. EST until Sunday 1 p.m. EST for Alcona, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin and Arenac counties.

Forecasters warn that heavy snowfall from the storm will lead to hazardous post-Thanksgiving travel—as the American Automobile Association expects over 80 million people to travel at least 50 miles from home over the November 25 to December 1 period.

The storm will spread through the Midwest and Great Lakes regions over the weekend with "widespread heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions," the National Weather Service said.

A lot of snow, rain and cold weather await travelers for the rest of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, with winter storm warnings posted Friday across the northern part of the country and more snow falling over the Great Lakes region. Storm warnings and advisories extended from Montana to New York, the National Weather Service said.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of Central Indiana — the first such alert in November since at least 2008, NWS staffers believe. The warning is in effect between 7 a.m. Nov. 29 and 10 a.m. Nov. 30.
